William Timlen, CPA, brings over three decades of experience in tax, accounting, and management. He concentrates on partnership taxation and passive activity loss rules, with a focus on profit and loss allocations and distributions. He serves as a consultant to borrowers, helping them understand the tax implications of debt restructurings and distressed real estate transactions, including foreclosures, deeds-in-lieu, and bankruptcy. He also works with real estate owners and developers on tax planning strategies. He provides advisory support to high-net-worth individuals and families, including assistance during federal and state tax examinations.

Tax Partner, EisnerAmper

William joined New York-based EisnerAmper, LLP, in 2016 as a Tax Partner in the Real Estate Group. The firm is recognized as a top 15 international tax advisory firm. During his time there, he has generated more than $2 million in new business over 10 years, including $1 million in 2018. His work has involved clients among the major names in the New York City real estate market. He contributed to strengthening the NYC Real Estate Group by recruiting experienced professionals for both tax and audit roles.

As part of the Real Estate Group Leadership Committee, he helps guide the firm’s Real Estate Practice. His responsibilities include contributing to thought leadership, supporting business development, overseeing education initiatives, and shaping branding efforts.
He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Career Journey


William Timlen began his career in 1993 as a Staff Accountant at Lear & Pannepacker, CPAs, in Princeton, New Jersey. Over four years, he prepared tax workpapers and handled federal and state partnership, individual, corporate, and trust tax returns. He also compiled and reviewed financial statements, researched tax matters, and supported managers with client correspondence related to tax issues.

In 1998, he joined KPMG, LLP as a Supervising Senior. In this role, he prepared detailed audit workpapers for international Fortune 100 companies in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. This experience helped him build a strong understanding of large-scale financial reporting and audit processes.

Owner, Timlen & Company

Timlen later founded his own accounting firm, Timlen & Company, in Princeton, New Jersey. His practice focused on tax consulting for high-net-worth individuals, real estate partnerships, and corporations. Within the first three years, he developed a business generating more than $600K annually. He built long-term client relationships, designed tax-planning strategies, implemented management advisory recommendations, and conducted detailed tax research to support client needs.

After running his firm for 10 years, he moved into a Tax Manager role at Wiener, Frushtick & Straub in New York. In this position, he reviewed complex partnership, corporate, trust, and individual tax returns. He advised clients in the real estate sector on like-kind exchanges, helping them defer millions in taxes. He also performed tax research for compliance and planning and represented clients in tax examinations before the IRS and state authorities.

Tax Principal, Friedman, LLP

He then joined Friedman, LLP as a Tax Principal in the Real Estate Group, where he worked for seven years before moving to his current role. At the firm, William delivered tax and consulting services to a wide range of clients, including multinational real estate companies, development firms, professional service organizations, and high-net-worth individuals.

He served as the lead tax contact for one of the firm’s largest accounts. In this role, he maintained and expanded the client relationship, led tax engagements, handled billing and collections, and managed teams of tax managers and senior staff. He also focused on business development by identifying cross-selling opportunities within the firm’s existing client base and building new relationships through networking.

In addition, he was part of a management group that worked to improve the NYC Tax Department's efficiency, effectiveness, profitability, and morale by identifying areas for improvement and recommending practical solutions.

Education

William Timlen attended Providence College in Rhode Island, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. During his time there, he was a pitcher on the Division 1 baseball team for 4 years.

He previously attended Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he was recognized as an All-State Baseball Player for two years.

Personal Life

He was born and raised in New Jersey and now lives in New Canaan, Connecticut, with his family. He is married to Heather and has two sons who are in college. One son is a senior at the University of Connecticut, and the other is a junior at the University of Miami. Timlen follows UConn basketball and the University of Miami football closely.

He also plays golf and is a member of the Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich. He enjoys traveling within the United States and internationally.

He will be celebrating his 55th birthday this May. William Timlen continues to balance his professional responsibilities with his personal interests and family life.
